Abstract

The stability is studied with respect to longitudinal perturbations of an infinite cylinder homogeneous along z axis. The problem is reduced to the one-dimensional one by the proper choice of the model. It is shown that the cylinder is unstable for any dispersion of the velocities (σ2). The asymptotic estimate of critical wavelength is found for several density distributions. It shows that the critical wavelength increases so that can hardly play any role in physical applications.
