Stellar magnetic fields and measurement techniques

Abstract

A short history and main steps of stellar magnetic field study (from first discovery in solar spots to modern investigations of general magnetic fields and their topology) are described. The problems of magnetic measurements technique and general questions of spectropolarimetry are discussed. Main attention is given to Zeeman-effect manifestation in stellar spectra, in particular, splitting and polarization of spectral lines and photoelectric measurements of Stokes parameters. Some other diagnostic techniques of magnetic field are discussed. A few concrete results of magnetic field study for some stars and interpretation of observation are demonstrated.
